Most people think of the Chesapeake Bay as a summer destination, or at most a fall one. March is usually overlooked, which is exactly why it feels so special here.

This time of year, Tacaro is quieter, calmer, and easier to enjoy at your own pace. The weather is cool but comfortable, the house feels especially cozy, and the entire stay tends to unfold more slowly. Guests often arrive expecting a simple weekend away and leave saying it was exactly the reset they needed.

March is also one of the easiest times to visit before the region begins getting busier in spring. Once April arrives, weekends across the Chesapeake Bay start filling with weddings and events. In March, everything feels relaxed and unhurried. You can enjoy the property and the surrounding towns without the rush that comes later in the season.

One of the best parts of a March stay is how slowly the mornings begin. Guests come down for breakfast anytime between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. and usually linger longer than they expected. Coffee or tea and freshly baked croissants in the dining room with a roaring fire in the fireplace turns into conversation as each guest awaits their freshly prepared entree, and there is no pressure to hurry off to the next thing. Many couples head back to their room or in the library or grand salon with a second cup and settle in for a quiet start to the day. Some bring a book they have been meaning to read for months and finally make time for it here. Every public room and guest room has a fireplace, so there is always a cozy spot to curl up.

If you work remotely, March can also be a great time for a weekday stay. The inn is peaceful, the atmosphere is quiet, and it is easy to spend a half day working somewhere comfortable before fully signing off and enjoying the rest of your afternoon.

Later in the day, the house becomes part of the experience. March weather makes staying in feel appealing in a way it does not always in warmer months. Guests bring books, puzzles, knitting, board games, journals, and cards. Some couples set up a puzzle and work on it together over the course of their stay. Others take an hour’s walk around the massive grounds, take an afternoon nap, sit by the fire, or simply enjoy having nowhere they need to be.

A lot of people tell us they do things here that they never seem to make time for at home. Not because they planned some elaborate itinerary, but because the pace naturally slows down enough for them to actually relax.

That said, March is still a wonderful time to explore nearby towns for a few hours. Tacaro is close enough to several destinations that you can head out and come back without spending the day in the car. 

Annapolis is an easy trip and especially enjoyable this time of year. Guests often go for lunch, coffee, bookstores, antique shops, or a relaxed walk around town. In March, you can actually enjoy it without long waits or heavy crowds, which makes the whole outing feel much easier. The annual Annapolis film festival in late March is always a hit

North Beach and Chesapeake Beach are also great options for a simple waterfront afternoon, and sailing starts back up in March. Even on cooler days, guests enjoy walking the boardwalk with a coffee, stopping into a local restaurant or at Vaughn Cheese or at one of the beer gardens and microbreweries, and then heading back to the inn before evening.

Many couples choose one nice dinner out during their stay, especially because reservations are easier to get this time of year. Others prefer to pick up takeout, snacks, order a charcuterie board and a bottle of wine on the way back and settle in for a quiet night at Tacaro instead. We regularly hear couples say they spent more uninterrupted time together here than they had in months.

That is really what makes March so special. It is not about squeezing in as many activities as possible. It is about having the space to rest, reconnect, and enjoy the property in a quieter season.
