Born on June 3, 1889, in Bowling Green, Virginia, Chewning was part of a family with deep roots in American history, descending from English ancestors who arrived in North America in 1655. He moved to Washington, D.C. at the age of five, where he attended various schools and laid the foundation for his future achievements.
In 1921, Chewning founded United Clay Products, a company that quickly became one of Washington, D.C.’s largest industries. His company supplied bricks for numerous iconic structures in the capital, including the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Mayflower Hotel, and the IRS building. Three of his kilns still stand near the U.S. National Arboretum, serving as a lasting testament to his success as a “clay baron.”
Chewning’s business ventures didn’t stop at clay. He also founded Continental Clay Products in West Virginia and became involved in several national companies, including Armour and Co. of Chicago and the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. Beyond his business ventures, Chewning was passionate about thoroughbred horse racing and breeding, even serving on the Maryland Racing Commission under two governors.

The name “Tacaro” itself carries special significance, blending the first two letters of Taylor and the first four letters of Caroline, Chewning’s beloved wife. This enduring tribute to their love is also reflected in the names of many of Chewning’s thoroughbred horses, including Tacaro Milkman, Tacaro Briar, and Tacaro Brandy.
The Chewning Family: A Lasting Influence
- Taylor Chewning and his wife, Caroline Mosher, were married for 32 years and raised their family at Tacaro Estate. Together, they created a legacy built on hard work, love, and dedication. The couple had one son, E. Taylor Chewning Jr., and a daughter, Virginia, who tragically passed away in 1963. They also had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. E. Taylor Chewning passed away in 1970 at the age of 81, followed by Caroline in 1977.
After their deaths, the Chewning children chose to subdivide and sell much of the 469 acres of farmland surrounding the estate, but they made sure to preserve the 75 acres that contain the mansion and its surrounding grounds. It was this vision that led to the preservation of Tacaro Estate as we know it today.
